Running almost never seems fun except to those who already excel at the sport. Some are simply born with an athletic aptitude that surpasses most others, and for them, running surely feels like an exhilarating experience every time. For the rest of the world, jogging usually requires extraordinary motivation; whether it is a jogging buddy or a promise of a treat at the end of a long run. With the advent of the iPod, though, and all of the mp3 players that followed, jogging music has been a prime motivator in getting people out and running toward fitness.

Ever since Rocky has become a cultural phenomenon, people have used "Eye of the Tiger" as one of the strongest, most inspirational jogging songs in history. Obviously, though, in the days before the mp3, carrying jogging music seemed impractical. Thus any jogging music a person had blared through a stereo, added extraordinary weight to the runner, and probably skipped. Or the jogging music just cycled through the runner's head; none of the above could work for too long.

As technology has minimized the size of almost everything electronic, selecting jogging music has become an eminently more pertinent problem. Its solution has also grown much simpler to attain, though the questions grow even more complex. Even cell phones can carry jogging songs to blare through a runner's headphones; so the question of what device to use has a plethora of answers. Still, having made it more easily feasible to carry the jogging music, selection of perfect songs has become a new science of sorts.

A beginning jogger may immediately assume dance music translates into the perfect jogging music. If the music seems to keep people moving in the club, it stands to reason it will keep people moving on their jogging path as ideal jogging music. Professionals seem to disagree. A jogger's body does tend toward the beat in a dance song while jogging; but given the rapid pace of many beats in these attempts at "jogging music," they can tire out the runner prematurely. As a result, certain artists have specifically designed jogging music to help keep a jogger moving for more than the beginning stages of the run.

Still, there may well be plenty of music on an iPod or other mp3 player to function as healthy jogging songs. Sites such as jogTunes help joggers discern what songs qualify as worthy jogging music by separating them by beats per minute, as well as genre and artist. Companies such as Siemens have also created new software for cell phones to make any song perfect jogging music by allowing a change in the tempo of the music, without altering the pitch of the song.

Even if the prospect of jogging rarely appeals immediately to one's sensibilities, technology has made it that much easier to get motivated for a good run. Any song can become worthy jogging music given the right considerations, and portability is no longer in question. People have less excuses than ever for not getting out and getting fit. It is okay for "Eye of the Tiger" to blare through those headphones again, but now at least other options are possible. It may be good enough for Rocky, but to each his or her own.
