When embarking upon running or jogging for sport or fun, the fitness level and goals of the individual should be primary considerations. Whichever option is selected, appropriate shoes and attire are necessary for the activity. To achieve the maximum level of comfort during any race, the best fitting running shorts must be worn.
V-notch and full-split shorts are the most popular types of running shorts for women. The v-notch shorts gained its name from the two outside seams that eventually meet at the bottom of the shorts. V-notch shorts look like bicycle shorts, but with extra padding. They fit as a second skin and tend to hold muscles tautly while running. These shorts are ideal for longer runs. There are mixed feeling about v-notch running shorts because of the closeness to the skin. However, the lack of chafing and the lack of movement add to the favorable judgment of these shorts. Some runners also believe this style is more suited for lean runners. Thus, full-split running shorts are another option for those who want a looser fit.
Full-split running shorts have slits on each side of the leg, thus the name full-split. These running shorts are short in length, allow more movement and better performance. Shorter length women's running shorts are good for both sprints and jogs. Longer full-split shorts are available. Long shorts range from one to seven inches, and are recommended for long distance runs. Liners are optional in full-split running shorts because they tend to shift during movement. If liners are included, they should be made of lightweight materials.
Crepe, microfibers and mesh are ideal materials for jogging short liners. These materials allow greater airflow and breatheability during both long and short jaunts. Cotton of any type is not recommended for liners or outer fabric for jogging shorts. Other optional features common to women's running shorts are pockets, reflective colors for night runs, drawstring waists and UV protection. Not all brands and styles offer the additional features. Drawstrings and UV protection are most common in full-split running shorts because of the loose fit. While pockets can be found in both styles of running shorts, reflective colors are not found in both styles.
Nike and Champion offer womens athletic shorts in all styles and materials. Mesh, baggy, loose fit, compression, stretch and cargo are some of the styles of Nike womens running and jogging shorts. The cost of these shorts range from $10.99 to $50.00. Women's running short styles designed by Champion include double dry woven, Vapor Camp Shorts and O2 Cool shorts. These shorts run $9.99 on sale to $35.00 regular price.
Whether a woman is new to running or a pro at the sport, running shorts should be selected for comfort and the type of race selected. These different styles of athletic shorts allow runners to be cool while they sweat.
